How Much Protein Women Need for Fat Loss

A clear protein target for women in a deficit, why the usual 60 g falls short, and a day of real food that reaches it without extra calories.

For fat loss, most women do best between 1.6 g and 2.0 g of protein per kilogram of body weight — roughly 100 g to 130 g per day at 62 kg. That is close to double the 50–60 g many women actually eat.

The reason the number matters more in a deficit than out of one: when calories drop, the body will take some of the shortfall from muscle unless protein intake and resistance training tell it not to. Protein is what makes the weight you lose mostly fat.

Pick your number

If you are within a normal weight range, use your current body weight: 62 kg × 1.8 = about 112 g per day.

If you are carrying substantial excess weight, use a target weight or lean mass estimate instead, or the number becomes unnecessarily high. 1.6 g per kg of target weight is a sensible ceiling.

Spread it across three or four meals of 25–35 g rather than one large dinner. Even distribution supports satiety through the day, which is the practical benefit that keeps a deficit alive.

A 110 g protein day that is not chicken four times

Breakfast: 200 g Greek yogurt with berries — 20 g. Or three eggs plus a slice of wholegrain toast — 22 g.

Lunch: 130 g tuna, chicken or tempeh in a grain bowl — 35 g.

Snack: cottage cheese, edamame, or a protein shake — 20 g.

Dinner: 150 g salmon, lean mince or paneer with vegetables and a starch — 35 g.

What high protein does not do

It does not damage healthy kidneys, it does not make women bulky, and it does not override a calorie surplus. Protein makes a deficit more comfortable and more selective about what you lose — the deficit itself still does the fat loss.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100 g of protein a day enough for a woman?
For most women between 55 kg and 65 kg in a moderate deficit, 100–120 g is an appropriate range and enough to protect muscle while training.
Does protein timing matter for fat loss?
Total daily intake matters most. Distributing it across three or four meals of 25–35 g is a small additional benefit, mainly through appetite control.
Will more protein make me lose weight faster?
Not directly. It improves body composition and appetite control, but weight loss still tracks your calorie deficit.
