Why the Scale Goes Up After a Good Week

The four usual causes
Glycogen and water: every gram of stored carbohydrate holds around 3 g of water. A high-carb day can add over a kilogram on the scale with zero fat gain.
Sodium: a salty meal shifts fluid balance for 24–48 hours. Restaurant food is the most common trigger.
Training soreness: hard or novel training causes temporary inflammation and fluid retention in the muscle.
Digestion: food in transit weighs what it weighs. Fibre-heavy days show up on the scale before they leave.
How to read the trend
Weigh daily, in the same conditions, and judge the seven-day average against the previous seven-day average. A single reading is noise; a two-week direction is signal.
Expect a genuine loss of roughly 0.5–1% of body weight per week while dieting. Anything faster is usually water, and it comes back.
What to do about it
Nothing, in most cases. Do not cut calories further in response to a water fluctuation — that is how a workable deficit turns into an unsustainable one.
